High quality backing is essential to the performance and durability of the product. It enables heavy wear without deterioration. And it’s this appreciation of what the contract market demands that has led us to develop a range of extremely high-performance backings.

Our two main types of backing are Graphlex® and GlasBac®. Graphlex is used as standard on most of our tufted ranges. GlasBac is primarily used on our fusion-bonded products and optional on other product types.

Graphlex backing Glasbac backing
Graphlex®: Graphlex® backing is dimensionally stable, even under extreme changes in temperature and humidity; it will not move, create gaps or curl up over time. It is constructed with a positive drape which has the effect of maximising the product’s ability to grip the floor, and minimising the amount of glue required for installation. It is also suitable for glue-free installation, using our innovative TacTiles™ system. Graphlex® has been successfully tested to ensure that it can withstand prolonged exposure to the use of castor chairs. It has also been designed to enhance the electrostatic properties of the surface material, making it suitable for use with sensitive electronic equipment. Graphlex® uses a high proportion of recycled content and has a low environmental impact according to LCA (life cycle assessment) compared to alternative backing types. And it can be recycled at end of life, using our innovative ReEntry 2.0 process. GlasBac®: GlasBac® is the ultimate in dimensionally stable carpet tile backing. It is easy to cut and install, and will not move, create gaps or curl up over time. Constructed from thermoplastic with full surface glass reinforcement, it provides maximum flatness and stability. GlasBac® is unaffected by water and can be cleaned by hot water extraction. It is also impervious to changes in atmospheric conditions. GlasBac requires a minimal amount of glue for installation and can also be installed using our TacTiles™ glue-free installation system, enabling easy uplift and replacement.

Other backing types
Magnetic Backing
Our Magnetic backing is a fully magnetised backing system, specifically designed for metal floors, such as Interface’s cable management system Intercell, facilitating easy access to cabling in the sub floor. The Magnetic Backing can be cut to any size or shape while still retaining its full magnetic properties which will last for the entire life of the tile, without affecting the operation of computers, magnetic storage devices or underfloor communications. Magnetic Backing is suitable for installation in areas with very heavy traffic.

Cushion Bac
For installations where an increased level of comfort and sound absorption is required, our Cushion Bac is available for most of our tufted carpet tile ranges. The Cushion Bac is more comfortable underfoot than conventional carpet tiles, creating a sense of added luxury and reducing fatigue. Cushion Bac improves environmental acoustics and further reduces the effects of echo and noise, making it an ideal choice for areas where extra acoustic properties are required.

Generally characteristics of a good carpet tile backing include:

  • Flatness and stability – preventing tiles from moving, curling up or creating gaps over time
  • Dimensional stability – assuring tiles do not shrink or expand under varied conditions of humidity and temperature
  • Floor hugging capability – minimising or eliminating the need for adhesives
  • Improved insulation and sound absorption
  • Low flammability and good smoke ratings
  • Low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other substances that can degrade indoor air quality
  • Recycled content and potential to recycle at end of life
  • Compatibility with cleaning techniques such as hot water extraction, which can extend the life of the carpet by removing stains.
